Howard Stern wished some fans a happy new year with a personal call.

Howard Stern fans who follow the radio host on Twitter had a chance to get up close and personal with the King of All Media on New Year's Eve.

Stern tweeted this message to his followers Saturday night: "Beth and I are drunk dialing. What's your phone number?"

Stern and wife Beth apparently followed through on that promise for the next few hours, at least according to Stern's Twitter feed, where he would tweet about who he spoke to. In numerous cases, he didn't reach the person, but tweeted that he left them a voicemail message.

One fan tweeted that he adopted his two cats because of advice from Stern, and Stern tweeted "Just called to hear about the cats. Got voicemail."

An equal opportunity pet lover, apparently, Stern also called two fans who mentioned their dogs, including one who said that he and his wife were staying home with a dog who'd just returned from the ICU.

To another, Stern tweeted "sorry to interrupt the video games," and to another, he said "Drinking beer alone. What happened? You clammed up on me."

Some of the fans then reported on their calls via Twitter. The aforementioned video gamer wrote "Howard Stern just called me! This new year rules already!"

Another lucky fan tweeted after her call: "OMG! It was like the best thing ever! I started crying after we hung up!"

When he was finished, Stern tweeted "Just made my last call. Going to bed. Wishing everyone a happy new year. If u get a call after this...it's not me."

Activist took on conservatives and President Obama alike

Years ago, when she was a left wing host on WABC, Lynn Samuels used to do a change-of-pace Christmas Eve show in which, among other things, she invited listeners to sing Christmas carols.

This year on Christmas Eve, Samuels died. She was 69.

No cause of death was immediately announced. Her body was discovered after she failed to report for her 10 a.m. Saturday show at Sirius XM radio and the company asked police to go to her Woodside, Queens, home.

On the radio, Samuels was exactly what much of the country thinks New York sounds like. She had a city accent she never tried to hide or soften, even when her bosses suggested it would prevent her from ever getting a radio job outside the city.

“This is who I am,” she said.

“She was unique beyond words,” said John Mainelli, her WABC program director and longtime friend. “I'm so glad I knew her.”

Samuels was a self-described progressive who often threw curveballs. She was a long-standing critic of President Obama, saying she didn’t believe he ever really had progressive credentials.

Her periodic unpredictability didn’t serve her well in today’s party-line talk radio, but helped give her a long run in the earlier, looser talk era.

Her criticism of conservatives often extended to her fellow radio hosts, but she would add that she liked a number of them personally. She became close friends with conservative host and writer Matt Drudge, serving for a time as his call screener.

Mainelli said he exchanged messages with her on Friday, at which time she said she would be doing both her Saturday and Sunday shows live this weekend.

“I am stunned,” Jay Diamond, her one-time WABC colleague, wrote on the New York Radio Message Board. “She sometimes got mad at me, but I loved her, and we were friends to the end. The world of radio, and the world in general, will miss this great talent, and great human being.”

Aside from politics, Samuels would devote long segments to cultural matters like books, music, a movie she saw or the merits and demerits of wearing foundation garments.

Her Christmas Eve show, which she said was not her favorite program, began as an attempt simply to do something fun and different on a night when most people weren’t discussing budget legislation.

Her own politics ran back to the activist movements of the 1960s, about which she often talked. Her radio career began around 1979 with a late-night show at WBAI (99.5 FM).

She moved to WABC in the late 1980s and remained there on different shifts for about 15 years. She was fired three times and rehired twice.

After WABC she struggled at times to stay in the city, taking a job in a laundromat while keeping her hand in radio at Sirius XM.

A very private person off the air, Samuels left no immediate survivors.

But the local radio world was saddened.

To the end, said Mainelli, she was “the same as she had always been - lively, full of curiosity, and happy, all existential things considered.”

Some of Uncle Neil's former friends and colleagues have launched a 24-hour Internet channel that plays old shows, parodies and calls, including the infamous "bridgetender" call.

The "Neil Rogers Comedy Channel" is a collaborative effort among Rogers' former producer Jorge Rodriguez, parody music genius Boca Brian and radio veteran Alan Michaels.

Rogers died last year on Christmas Eve.

South Florida radio veterans trade airwaves for streams

Following a quick trip to the restroom, radio talk show host Jorge Rodriguez sprints across his tiny Hollywood apartment in shorts and socks and sits down in front of a microphone and a cold beer.

Just as he is about to resume his show, Rodriguez gets distracted by a group of Jehovah's Witnesses outside his window. "Go away," he yells into a bullhorn pointed out the open window. "Give me your address so I can go to your home and pitch my belief system."

Without skipping a beat, Rodriguez leans back into the microphone connected to an arsenal of computers and resumes his angry rant against Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain. He burps out loud in midsentence.

Rodriguez, the former longtime producer for legendary South Florida radio bad boy Neil Rogers, has been broadcasting Uncle Neil's old brand of acerbic and shock talk radio. Only there is no radio.

Rodriguez is one of a small group of self-proclaimed "South Florida radio refugees" using their history to forge a new future in online radio — a bunch of old fuddy-duddies who have embraced technology to further the careers and passion for radio.

"The Internet has really taken a chunk out of the terrestrial radio market and is responsible for a lot of talented people losing their jobs," said Rodriguez. "But the same element responsible for us losing our jobs has also become the vehicle that has allowed us to continue our jobs."

With the development of smartphones, tablets and other Internet-capable devices, Rodriguez and others are banking that their shows will be at the forefront of a Web-based radio revolution.

In April, a joint study conducted by Arbitron and Edison Research discovered that one in five Americans are now streaming audio weekly and the number who listen to Internet radio in their cars has nearly doubled in one year, and now reaches an estimated 57 million people age 12 and older per week.

South Florida radio veteran Alan Michaels said America's new way of listening to radio has helped him find new homes for several now-defunct radio stations, including 103.5 SHE and Zeta-4.

"Nobody listens to the radio the same way anymore," said Michaels. "What we are doing is still providing that same old style and music, but delivering it a different new way thanks to technology."

Although anyone with a laptop can conceivably have his own radio shows, Rodriguez and Michaels say producing original content with a South Florida perspective is what sets their online radios stations apart.

After being fired from WQAM, AM 560, in 2009, Rodriguez has slowly been building an Internet radio network with at least 12 original online shows produced in South Florida.

Rodriguez's network, called SoFloRadio, is also home to progressive talk show host Nicole Sandler, who made headlines in April when she was arrested during U.S. Rep. Allen West's town hall meeting for allegedly being disruptive (charges were later dropped). There is also a wine and beer show on Thursday evenings and a sex and relationship show hosted by longtime South Florida radio personality Gina Martell.

The shows are streamed through different websites and cellphone apps, making it difficult to count the number of listeners, Rodriguez said. He estimates 500-1,000 listeners any given hour.

Rodriguez said his business is "operating in the black" but he jokes his company is nonprofit.

Michaels owns and runs Shesonlyrocknroll.com, a nod to the old outlaw classic rock station, which launched during the late 1970s and went off the air in 1995.

"If you are from Miami, then you remember 103 SHE," said Michaels.

The station plays classic rock music 24-7, and several DJs from the era, including Cory James and Johnny Dolan, host their own music shows. Dolan streams his shows from an apartment in Lauderdale Lakes.

The early success has led Michaels to launch similar music channels that carry the names and similar programming of now-defunct stations such as classic rock Zeta-4 and oldies WFUN.

Dolan and Michaels say they get calls and emails from South Floridians who now live in other parts of the world.

"We're still a hometown radio station," said Dolan. "But because of the Internet and technology, now we're able to deliver that worldwide."

Comic Artie Lange, who lives in Hoboken, is making a comeback with 3-hour nightly show streamed live on iheartradio.com

Hoboken’s Artie Lange, the former Howard Stern Show sidekick, has teamed up with fellow comedian Nick DiPaolo in Lange’s return to radio, LaughSpin.com reports.

The program, called “The Nick and Artie Show,” can be streamed live on iheartradio.com from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. and is being carried by 940 WINZ: The Sports Animal in Miami, reports said, noting that “DirectTV is capturing the action to broadcast at a later date. And each hour of every episode will be offered the following day as an on-demand podcast.”

The show is Lange’s return to the airwaves after many bad breaks, including his attempted suicide in January 2010. His last gig was Stern’s daily morning show, which is broadcast on Sirius and XM satellite radio. Stern has not replaced Lange since he left the show.

The comedian said he has since been in three psychiatric wards and two rehab centers.

LaughSpin described his experiences:

He participated in, among other things, group therapy and art therapy. There was also some old-school gaming: “You haven’t lived until you’ve played Scrabble in a psych ward,” he said.

Lange said he’s currently attending AA meetings to help stay sober, reports said.

Earlier, Juror 3308 said he was a fan of the Bubba the Love Sponge Show and had found the derogatory song about Casey Anthony called 'My Trunk' — a parody of 'My Humps' by The Black Eyed Peas — funny; however, he didn't take it as fact.

"I do listen to Bubba the Love Sponge occasionally," he said. "I think it's an entertainment show. I don't look to it for a lot of fact."

IO WORLD MEDIA, which streams BUBBA THE LOVE SPONGE on the Internet, reported that Q1 revenues rose 61.4% to $293,000. It also reported a net loss of $248,000, but the company expects that to be more than made up by revenue that was received during the very successful launch of RADIOIOLIVE and the Early Enlistment Program for the BUBBA ARMY, which will be recognized over the three-year life of the Early Enlistment subscriptions.

A FEBRUARY promotion to launch BUBBA’s uncensored show raised nearly $1 million in discounted subscription revenues, which explains why IO had a little over $760,000 of cash on hand at the end of Q1.

But, in an exclusive interview with RadarOnline.com, longtime Howard Stern sidekick Robin Quivers says she could soon be going out on her own – 30 years after joining Stern.

“I love to do radio and television and I’ve always wanted my own television show, so I’ve been putting out feelers for those kinds of things” said Quivers, 58.

“(I could) express myself in ways that I don’t necessarily get to express myself on our show.“

And don’t dismiss Quivers’ talent as a world-class interviewer. On their Sirius satellite show, she and Stern have become de facto therapists for actors David Arquette and Courteney Cox as they go through their very public split.

“They have an incredible relationship,” Robin said of the pair. “There is obviously an incredible amount of love and respect between them, and maybe this is growing pains.”

Legal battle begins over radio personality Neil Rogers' estate

Rogers signed two wills shortly before his death

Even in death, South Florida radio talk show great Neil Rogers is capable of whipping up controversy.

Rogers, who dominated the local radio market for years with his biting wit, died Dec. 24 at age 68. It now has emerged that within weeks of suffering a stroke and a heart attack in October, Rogers signed two different wills.

The competing wills are at the center of a brewing courtroom battle over Rogers' estate. How much money is at stake is unclear, with no mention of Rogers' assets in court papers.

A will drawn up on Nov. 3 in Toronto — where Rogers had been living — leaves his entire estate to 21-year-old Christian Ramon Sanchez Hernandez.

The other will, signed 20 days later in South Florida, divides the estate equally between Hernandez, who is described in it as Rogers' companion, and two of the broadcast personality's longtime friends, David Hine and Jonathan Julian.

The Nov. 23 document includes a clause that declares any will signed in Canada "null and void." Court records show that Rogers previously drew up a will in South Florida in July 1997 that divided his estate equally between Hine and Julian.

"This will develop into a full-blown will contest," said Scott A. Weiss, an attorney representing Norm Kent, Rogers' agent and personal attorney who was named the representative of the estate in the Nov. 23 will. Weiss declined to answer specific questions about the wills or the value of Rogers' estate.

Hernandez's attorney, Jeffrey Skatoff, argues in court documents that the later will is invalid because Rogers was severely ill and suffering from dementia when he signed it, leaving him "mentally and physically incapacitated" to make such a decision.

Rogers had been financially supporting Hernandez and the earlier will drawn up in Canada reflects that, Skatoff said. The attorney described Hernandez as a close friend of Rogers.
Skatoff said he is hopeful a settlement will be reached quickly rather than having a prolonged legal fight over the estate.

The two competing wills have been filed as part of a probate case at the Broward County Courthouse with Circuit Judge Mark Speiser set to determine which one is valid.

Rogers spent more than three decades in the South Florida radio market, never shying away from controversy with a show that veered from serious issue-oriented topics to comedy bits. He came out on the air as gay in 1977, an almost unprecedented move for a media figure at that time.

He was the first known South Florida radio personality to be paid in excess of $1 million a year. Born Nelson Roger Behelfer, he was ranked the 15th most important talk show host in the nation in 2006 by Talkers magazine. When he died, he left no immediate family.

Rogers returned from Canada to his Plantation Acres home in November for medical treatment and to be closer to his friends. His condition worsened after Thanksgiving, Kent told the Sun Sentinel in December.

Howard Stern's Company Sues SiriusXM Radio

Howard Stern's production company and manager are suing SiriusXM Radio ... claiming Howard was bilked out of stock awards SiriusXM promised him.

According to the suit, filed in New York and obtained by TMZ, Sirius courted Howard to come there in the first place by promising him a share "in any success that the company achieved." But the suit claims, once Sirius conquered its chief competitor -- XM -- and acquired more than 20 million subscribers, it decided on its own Howard had been paid enough.

Stern alleges the subscriber estimates on which his stock bonuses were to be based ranged from 3.7 million in 2006 to 12.1 million in 2010. According to Stern, he actually blew those estimates out of the water and Sirius today has a subscriber base of more than 20 million subscribers.

The suit claims, "Sirius needed Stern more than Stern needed Sirius."

The suit seeks unspecified damages.

Calls to Sirius were not returned.

FMQB Q&A With Syndicated And radioIO Personality Bubba The Love Sponge

After five years of broadcasting his popular afternoon show on Sirius XM channel Howard 101, syndicated and satellite radio host Bubba The Love Sponge has left the service and embarked upon an exclusive new Internet-only broadcast agreement with radioIO. A contract renewal agreement could not be reached between the Bubba Radio Network and Sirius XM, making him the first major talk and entertainment radio personality to leave satellite radio for a future on Internet radio.

An announcement was made on Monday by Tampa-based ioWorld Media that Bubba’s syndicated, terrestrial morning talk show could now be heard streaming on its 73-channel music service, www.radioIO.com, and that several more 24-hour channels of exclusive BTLS content will also launch on January 10.

We caught up with Bubba as he was overseeing the construction of his new state-of-the-art studio (which will additionally be modified for video purposes) and got up to speed on his newest adventure.

Been quite a busy time for you lately.
I’ve been so fortunate to work with Howard [Stern]. He believed in me and I can never repay him and he understands my situation. They asked me to take an 80 percent pay cut. Which is basically paying me about the same as Ft. Myers does terrestrially. Sirius has always been difficult to negotiate with; take it or leave it offers. For five years I took it, but now I am doing well enough on terrestrial radio that I now have this opportunity with radioIO. I have direct ownership in the company and direct profitability in the subscribers. I think that I have a big enough following that it could be very profitable.

What has been the reaction from your fans and how many have many claimed to have cancelled their Sirius XM subscription?
Based on my Twitter account and emails, I’d have to say it’s in the thousands. This whole thing is over a difference of three of four hundred thousand dollars. They weren’t paying me seven million like Martha Stewart. This is over relatively small money. That company is very enamored with Hollywood people. Radio people and Hollywood people are different. They spent millions and millions of dollars on non-radio people, and that’s why they are in a budget crisis right now.

Tell me a bit about how your new endeavor with radioIO will roll out and what has you most excited about your new path.
It’s rolling out soft now. Starting on Monday, we’ll start doing our midday show (10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.), and it’s all going to be free until March 1, and then we will have a subscriber-based module. Bubba 1 will always be free – the FM show live and re-purposed. We will market that to some of the cities I used to be in like Hartford and Miami. We’re the first to do a show (not a "shift") that has a fairly loyal following and a nationwide audience to do this. What Howard was to satellite, we’re sort of doing the same thing with the Internet. Hopefully I can forge the way to some other people like Steve Dahl and other people that have been fucked with in the PPM world, to have an option to be able to 1) have a show; 2) have an audience; and 3) make some money. I’m on the board of directors of radioIO and kind of the President Of Talk Programming, now though, it’s only my show. In the next 24 months, we’ll rollout several talk channels. I’d love to get Phil Hendrie, Kevin Matthews, Steve Dahl and have a delivery mechanism so that we can have all these great broadcasters that I respect an opportunity to make money. A direct revenue sharing endeavor; you eat what you kill. I’d like to be the Marconi of this template.

Monday through Thursday we will end the terrestrial radio show at 10:30 a.m., and then work it into a two-hour uncensored, Internet-only show as part of the subscription package. The other part of the subscription package is that you get 70 music channels commercial-free. I also own all of my intellectual property, so any radio show that I have, dating back to Grand Rapids, 98 Rock and Power Pig, you will also be able to go download shows or listen on demand. Listeners will also have access to channels programmed by the guys in my crew, as well as some one-off shows on Bubba 2 with people like my friend Hulk Hogan.

There’s so many good personalities that have been squeezed out in this PPM world, it’s really fucking frightening, quite frankly. I have one hell of a following and infrastructure built in radioIO to maybe give these great broadcasters an outlet, instead of worrying about corporate. Sirius XM made a huge mistake; instead of going out and getting Martha Stewart and fucking Oprah Winfrey and Jamie Foxx, they should have gone out and gotten Jim Rome, Rush Limbaugh, Phil Hendrie, Steve Dahl, Bubba The Love Sponge, Mancow, Opie & Anthony, Mike Church, Andrew Wilkow, and all of these great personalities, lock those people up, paid them money that CBS, Clear Channel and Cox can’t compete with, and they wouldn’t have the problems they have today. Let’s not forget; we’re still doing radio.

How has your new deal with radioIO been received by your terrestrial partners?
Cox has been wonderful. Beasely has been wonderful. They let me talk about it and support it. The only thing that prevented me from doing this two years ago was my no-Internet clause at Sirius. I have a year left on my Cox deal and we’ll see how it shakes out ten months form now. The terrestrial fans have been cool. They will get some added value in their broadcast as we will be able to edit and re-purpose content from the midday show on FM the next morning if it’s something crazy or exciting.

Neil Rogers: The Gay Activist Who Wasn't

My friend Neil Rogers is still alive. But I cannot lie to you. He is dying. Sadly, at only the age of 68, Neil is losing his battle for life to a combination of irreversible heart attacks and strokes. The matter is complicated by multiple arterial blockages making his situation inoperable, worsened by the diabetes that has plagued him for years.

It hurts. I have been Neil's attorney and friend for years, negotiating his contracts and representing him in numerous legal battles that have been on the front pages of the news. Together, we have challenged homophobes and the FCC, employers and interlopers, all of whom had a hard time dealing with a gay man that dominated the local airwaves.

No one and nothing was sacred when Neil Rogers had a microphone in his hands, not me, `Norma Cant' – the lawyer with the "fag" newspaper who negotiated a million dollar contract which made him rich, or the Pope, whose heralded visit to South Florida `worthlessly blocked traffic.' Whether it was a pompous mayor in Hallandale or a cop on the road, Neil simply had no mercy for those who infringed on individual rights or free expression.

Neil was equally brutal on dumb callers and smart CEO's, treating them all as imposters, one and the same. He outed closeted leaders who tiptoed around homosexuality, relentlessly humiliating them on the air, whether they were Matt Drudge or Bryan Norcross.

Neil hated gay activism, could not stand gay activists, and did not hang out with gay people. Actually, he did not hang out with many people. He pushed most people away from him. He had few intimate relationships. But he is the most well known, open, out, heroic gay man in South Florida, and he inspired thousands of listeners for over 30 years, gay or straight.

Dare to berate him on the air for being gay, and he would eat you up and spit you out. Hecklers were hopeless against Neil's stunning retorts. He did more than control the dump button. He controlled the dialogue with lightning quips, measured rants, and biting sarcasm.

Ultimately, Neil is the consummate individualist. In 1976, when gay homophobia in South Florida was running rampant with the Orange Juice Queen, Anita Bryant, Neil came out on the air. His career still flourished, and he proved you could be out and proud while being out and loud. Two years after his retirement, I see that Talkers Magazine just listed him in their top 50 talk show hosts ever.

Two weeks ago, when I owned up to the

fact that Neil's time is limited, the story still made page 1 of the Sun-Sentinel. Neil has thousands of fans that he influenced over decades. Hundreds of fans and colleagues are still posting tributes to Neil online at Tom Jicha's TV Plus page. Being gay, so what?

Neil is, after all, every workingman's hero, whose voice spoke volumes for the average person railing against mediocrity, apathy, or stupidity. No one cared about whether he was gay or straight. Everyone was just glad to have their voice heard on the airwaves.

Yes, it was just a radio show, but what a show it was, making fun of `Julio's,' old Jews, `Schvartzes,' Ebonics, and everyone from Janet Reno to Nelson Mandela. You see, Neil taught us all we had a lot more in common than we do apart. "Guess what," he would say, "Even the Pope gets hemorrhoids."

Stated one AM host, "Oh, I hated when he mentioned my name, but I hated it more

when he did not." Everyone sought to be noticed even if it meant being the target of a notorious attack. Everyone respected Neil's astounding incisiveness, his remarkable recall, and marvelous wit. He is an irreverent iconoclast whose quips would cut you like a sharp razor.

Neil considers himself agnostic, but the true message of his life is really Biblical: none of us is above sin. Not Neil, who once got caught by a cop, allegedly jerking off in a Miami Beach adult theater, or Bill Clinton, who was suposedly getting oral sex in the Oval Office.

On the air though, Neil had no tolerance for ineptitude. He was a consummate professional who imposed on those who worked with him the same demands he put on himself, which was a call for excellence over expedience, achievement over apathy.

It's hard to believe only four weeks ago he was calling me from the ER, declaring how useless hospitals were, and insisting I come `get him the hell out of here.' It did not matter that it was a Sunday night at 10 p.m. He called 40 times till he found me. Neil was used to getting his way.

When I visit him now in the hospice, I usually play some of his old radio bits over my iPad, logging onto them at www. neilrogers.com. "The best," he says, about them. Candidly, he cannot say much more, and I can't say he has lots of time left.

What I can say is that the Elvis of the airways is leaving the building, departing with a legacy of enduring laughter and spectacular AM radio performances, the likes of which we will never hear on the air again.

Neil Rogers would hate me for saying this, but he is a gay man who has become a straight hero.

Good news - The Howard Stern show will be available on smartphone APPs in January. Bad news - The Bubba the Love Sponge will not be on satellite radio at all. Seems to be off already.

SiriusXM channel 101 is airing History of Howard act 1 in Bubba's afternoon time slot. On Twitter he is telling marks (Bubba fans) That he still has not heard a word from SiriusXM and that it looks like he is done on satellite.

Top rated radio host, Bubba the Love Sponge is hosting the 11th Annual event, which started drawing crowds at 6:00 a.m.

Within 45 minutes, a pile of toys was already building as the line of cars circled around the building.

He told 10 News, "The listeners of the show, the Bubba Army are so generous. We have bikes and X-Boxes and everything in there,

so it's a great deal. It's kind of a non-conventional way to get toys, but what else would you expect from Bubba the Love Sponge?"

The toys will benefit PARC, The Spring of Tampa and Tampa's Church Without Walls International.

When Howard announced his new contract he also announced that his show would be available on smartphone APP (Officially The Pocket Tunes APP brings the Stern show to my iphone quite well). He just didn't know when this would start. Looks like January is the answer.....

Howard Stern Hits Sirius XM Mobile App in January

With news that popular shock jock Howard Stern has resigned with Sirius XM satellite radio for an additional five years, one of the biggest questions has remained unanswered — at least until now.

When will Howard Stern hit the Sirius XM mobile application? As part of Stern’s new five-year contract, he and his crew will have their daily show broadcast on Sirius XM’s mobile applications for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad, BlackBerry, and Android. Since Stern’s first contract with Sirius XM expires at the end of December, the Howard Stern Show will officially hit the mobile application in January.

No word as to whether or not the mobile app update (which included the Howard Stern Show) will hit on the 1st of January, but if it doesn’t, it will just days later.

Neil Rogers’ friend and attorney Norman Kent released the following statement regarding Neil Rogers condition on Sunday afternoon. Here it is unedited in its entirety.

In an attempt to dispel rumors, rely on facts and enhance public awareness, the following statement is being released to the media.

Over the past few weeks, many fans and listeners of Neil Rogers have followed his medical condition closely. I have tried to provide daily updates, but I now see that will be too trying. Neil did not go to a hospice to recover. Doctors tell us there is no reason to believe he necessarily will. You see, he faces more than heart issues.

Just as Ronald Reagan had the courage to tell America a quarter of a century ago that he was an American afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, so too must I share with you that Neil Rogers is suffering from progressive vascular dementia, a very common form of dementia characterized by blockages in the blood supply to the brain, which lead to neurological symptoms.

The complications associated with Neil’s diabetes and the corresponding stroke, have functionally impaired his cognitive abilities. He is not always aware of his circumstances and surroundings. The progressive deterioration and decline has been rapid; significant since Thanksgiving.

Neil is also suffering presently from ‘Sundowners Syndrome,’ also known as sundowning. It is a symptom often associated with the early stages of dementia, including Alzheimer’s. It is an uncomfortable sleep and mood disorder which causes sufferers to experience periods of extreme agitation and confusion during the late afternoon or early evening hours, leading to irritability towards even caregivers or hospital staff.

Far from being alone, Neil is on a daily basis surrounded by his longest and most loyal intimate friends and acquaintances. He has 24 hour around the clock nursing care, and he has also, when lucid, been buoyed by multiple colleagues in the broadcast industry reaching out to him, stirring nostalgic remembrances of days that once were.

We thank you, his fans and friends, for your outpouring of support and affection, as well as your charming online tributes to Neil’s influence in your life, but there is no reason for further daily updates. It is time to move on.

Together then, let’s use this time to raise public awareness of a disease that places an ever so heavy burden on family and friends, not to mention the suffering it may impose on those so afflicted, whether you were a President or pontificator.

Doctors say vascular dementia is even preventable, especially if people start engaging in preventative care at a young age and stay committed to maintaining their general physical health as we mature.

Neil Rogers has been an outstanding talent, whose voice on the radio spoke for every workingman who ever wanted to rail against his bosses or mediocrity. He has been a remarkable and incisive social critic, armed with an incredible memory, biting wit, and tempered, measured humor. But this is not his eulogy, as he is still very much alive, though not fully the person he once was.

As you remember him, recall what he used to say- “It’s only a radio show”. Hopefully, in those hours on the air he taught all of us to press on in our daily lives with an abiding sense of wit and humor. Today, though, he is a patient in a hospice, asking that you respect his privacy and dignity. Visits and calls are no longer appropriate.

In closing, let me say that it has been a privilege to serve as agent and counsel for Neil Rogers for over a quarter of a century.

As we have seen, the same foibles, faults, and flaws affecting all human beings have at times humbled Neil.

As demanding as he was, he only sought professionalism on the air and loyalty in his personal life.

As ballistic and bellicose and belligerent as he was on the air, so too was he remarkably generous, beneficent, and tame in his personal life.

As much of a star as Neil may have been, so too can you be a star in your own life for your friends, your family and those in need. Make every day count.

There’s nothing new to report on Neil Rogers as of noon Wednesday.

Neil is under hospice care and no surgery is planned.

The only reason I’m putting up this post is I know from the overwhelming response that many of you will be checking here for the latest.

Norm Kent, Neil’s friend and attorney, has been reading to Neil the comments many of you have submitted and he says they really cheer up Neil.

So if you have something to say that you’d like Neil to hear, submit them.

The same rules are in effect. I will delete negative remarks as soon as I find them.

The man is very sick. Show some humanity and compassion.

A Maple Leaf Fan In Rough Shape

I lived in South Florida from 1997 to 2000 while attending law school. At that time there was but one all sports radio station, WQAM. Amongst other things, WQAM was the home of the Dolphins and yes, the Florida Panthers who got not much love from either the sports fans or the media.

There were a few who talked a lot of hockey, Randy Moller, Dennis Potvin on the hockey side, a guy who’s name escapes me used to talk sports betting from an offshore casino and Steve Goldberg were the main hockey guys.

There was one guy, who wasn’t a “sports guy” per se who not only talked hockey, but Toronto Maple Leafs hockey. He had a morning show that was “offensive”. He crossed every line imaginable. The only thing that could be said about him is that he was an equal offender. He ripped on everyone. Every religion (I’m pretty sure he was Jewish- but he ripped on Jews along with everyone else). He ripped hispanics, cubans, whites… He ripped on gays, lesbians and straights- in the most offensive ways imaginable.

The guys name is Neil Rogers. Rogers was in a word hilarious. As long as u could accept the fact he was going to rip everyone he was always good for a laugh. He talked hockey all the time. He talked Panthers hockey and Leafs hockey. As a hockey fan in a non traditional hockey market it was great to hear a leaf fan talking hockey. Many toronto fans used to call in when he was available on the internet.

I was fortunate enough to have access to panthers tickets and used to see him at games all the time. He wore a leafs jersey to many. He rarely missed a leafs panthers tilt.

Today the Florida Sun Sentinel is reporting that Rogers has been moved to hospice.

Its really too bad. Rogers spent a lot of time here in Toronto, in Florida and in Amsterdam. As offensive as he was on air, I just got the sense he was a good guy.

Neil, I loved listening to you when I was down there. I hope you get through this with as little pain as possible. Its too bad we didn’t get to see the buds get back to the promise land sooner.

Neil Rogers surgery off, moved to hospice care

Neil Rogers will not have open heart surgery afterall, according to a close friend.

Doctors decided to cancel Rogers’ surgery, scheduled for Friday then moved to Tuesday. He has been transferred to hospice care, said former radio colleague Craig Worthing, who has been visiting Rogers at Westside Regional Hospital.
Rogers’ attorney and friend, Norm Kent, confirmed that the surgery was canceled because Rogers is too weak for a favorable prognosis. A meeting was scheduled for later Tuesday, he said, in which how and where Rogers will receive hospice care will be discussed.
Rogers has suffered a stroke and a heart attack, possibly two, since last summer. He returned to Broward, where he has maintained a home, from Toronto, where he had been living, on Nov. 7 for treatment and to be closer to friends. Rogers, 68, has no surviving immediate family.
I’ll have further information as it becomes available.

Local broadcasting legend Neil Rogers is having serious health issues and will undergo open heart surgery on Friday.
Rogers, who has been living in Toronto, returned to South Florida for treatment, according to Norman Kent, Rogers’ friend and attorney. Kent said he has petitoned the court to appoint a guardian to tend to Rogers’ affairs and make decisions until Rogers, who turned 68 on Nov. 5, recovers.
Kent said he has been told by doctors that the surgery is “high risk,” because of complicating factors including Rogers’ diabetes.
Rogers suffered a stroke and heart attack in October but seemed to be recovering until recently. “His condition has worsened since Thanksgiving,” Kent said.

Kent says over the past few days, Rogers has been in and out of consciousness. The quick-mind and sharp tongue he is known for has been replaced with sometimes not knowing his surroundings and not recognizing visitors.

NEW YORK (AP) — Talk show host Laura Schlessinger won't stay away from radio very long — only a weekend, in fact.

Sirius XM Radio said Monday it has a multiyear deal with Schlessinger to bring her "Dr. Laura" advice program to satellite radio in January. Specific terms were not revealed.

Schlessinger had said in August she was quitting her syndicated radio program, a week after she apologized for using the N-word on the air 11 times while talking to a black woman, and activists demanded her ouster.

She ends her traditional radio program on Friday, Dec. 31. The following Monday, she starts at Sirius.

Baba Booey: Gary Dell'Abate Talks the Future of The Howard Stern Show, Debuting on Letterman & His Surprising Past

They Call Me Baba Booey, the just released autobiography of Howard Stern Show producer Gary Dell’Abate, reminded me why I love discovering people’s life stories. It’s why I spent my lunch periods in junior high pouring over whatever dusty biographical content the school library offered up, and why I love interviewing people.
I’ve been an on and off listener and fan of The Howard Stern Show since the mid-nineties, and what I always appreciated about the show is its ability to stretch societal boundaries rather than conforming to them. As producer of, and inadvertent radio personality on The Howard Stern Show for the past twenty-seven years, Dell’Abate boasts the famous moniker, Baba Booey; born out of an infamous verbal stumbling on the air, circa July 26, 1990. Dell’Abate notes in his memoir that after a while his nickname “wasn’t about me anymore. It had morphed into being a code for the show, like a battle cry,” further explaining the phrase “Baba Booey” as “a call to action” for Stern Show fans who feel like members of an exclusive sub-culture.

Concerned that people would judge a book by its cover, Dell’Abate bemoans during our conversation, “People are going to think, ‘Howard Stern’s flunky wrote a book. What could it possibly be, some book about jokes?’ The hardest part is going to be getting people to actually open my book to see what it’s really about.”

I was taken aback to hear him refer to himself that way. Jokes aside, Gary Dell’Abate has been instrumental in orchestrating what is arguably the most notable and groundbreaking radio program of the late 20th century; far from flunky status. As a pioneer of a once fledgling satellite radio technology, The Howard Stern Show makes the defiant statement, in the 21st century, that it will continue to set its own standards and practices rather than being bound by mainstream FCC regulations.

In They Call Me Baba Booey, Dell’Abate chronicles growing up with a mother who continually struggled with mental illness, as her husband and three sons were forced to tread lightly around her erratic moods that regularly swung from genial and accommodating to depressed, and sometimes volatile. Yet, Gary asserts that at times his mother displayed great amounts of strength and focus when it came to protecting her family or rallying around a loved one who was in need. According to Dell’Abate’s own recollection of events expressed in his book, it was this strange yin and yang from his childhood that shaped much of his personality and ultimately led him to feel at home producing The Howard Stern Show. The parting statement of his memoir: “Whenever I kiss [my mother] goodbye and walk out the door of her building, I thank God I grew up the way I did. Otherwise you’d be calling someone else Baba Booey.”

Gary and I recently spoke in-depth about the over-the-top raunchy humor that he has diligently produced for Howard Stern for nearly three decades, his personal and familial struggles, and his surprising socio-political views. Ironically, Gary had just come from visiting the catalyst for much of what you’re about to read below, his mother.

Gary Dell’Abate, Baba Booey: It’s hard doing a full time job and selling a book at the same time (laughs), and I’m actually just coming back from visiting my mother. On this trip there is always a small area where my phone drops out, so I’ll give you a heads up when we’re there. Radio host Thom Hartmann scores TV gig

Progressive talker Thom Hartmann, available on hundreds of radio stations under the auspices of Dial Global, is kicking off a two-hour night time program called “The Big Picture with Thom Hartmann” on RT Channel, a Russian-based internation AV channel available on satellite and cable.

Hartmann has prior radio experience on the ill-fated Air America Network.

RT is available on a limited basis in the US, but claims millions of households in both the US and Canada. Cable systems in Washington DC, New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Diego carry it, and it is available on both major cable MSOs and satellite services in Canada. Hartmann’s program will operate out of RT’s Washington DC bureau.

Hartmann commented, “We are excited to be in the Nation's capital, the epicenter of political process at such a critical time. The next two years in our election cycle will be the new dancing with the stars...and we plan to bring our audience in-depth coverage on the issues effecting us all.”

Sirius XM-5 satellite delivered to Baikonur for October launch

A giant An-124 Ruslan cargo plane has landed at the Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan with a telecommunications satellite that will be launched for Sirius XM radio in mid-October, the Russian Space Agency said on Sunday.

The Sirius XM-5 satellite and an array of support equipment were unloaded and taken to a clean room for final assembly and testing, Roscosmos said on its website.

The launch is expected to take place on October 14. The satellite will function as an in-orbit spare for the Sirius XM satellite radio network. All four previous Sirius satellites were launched on Proton rockets.

The October launch will be the sixth time a Proton-M heavy carrier rocket has lifted off with a foreign satellite in 2010. Three other Proton-M rockets have orbited Russian satellites.

The final assembly of the rocket started at Baikonur last month.

The inventive storyteller “Greaseman” Doug Tracht returned to the market on the Cox Radio classic rocker in the Fall of 2008. Many locals had heard about his earlier time there at the original “Ape”, WAPE. Shannon Burke's wife files for divorce

One year after she publicly professed her commitment and love to her husband, who fired a bullet that grazed her head, the wife of local radio personality Shannon Burke filed for divorce.

Catherine Burke filed her case against the 810 AM talk show host in Seminole County on July 21. Reached by telephone Tuesday, she declined to comment.

Shannon Burke also declined to discuss the filing.

The divorce filing isn't the first for the Burkes, who married in St. Petersburg in July 2008.

Catherine Burke filed for divorce in May 2009, one month after the shooting incident, in which Shannon Burke also shot his wife's dog in their Seminole County home.

Burke was jailed, charged, fired from Real Radio 104.1 where he was a fixture, and thrown out of his house.

He told a 911 operator the shooting was an accident.

Catherine Burke initially stated Shannon Burke was angry that night, said he was going to shoot her dog and make her watch, and then he did.

But in July 2009, Catherine Burke made a drastic turnaround, saying she thought her husband shot her by accident.

"I love Shannon Burke, always have, always will," Burke told the Orlando Sentinel at that time. "I am committed to being his wife."

The same month, Catherine Burke filed paperwork dropping her divorce suit.

Shannon Burke served about four months in the Seminole County Jail after he pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and opening fire in a building.

Then in January, a judge ordered Burke to serve 60 days in Orange County on a probation-violation charge related to a 2007 reckless driving incident.

He ultimately served 35 days after receiving credit for time served and other factors.

When Burke walked out of the Orange County Jail in May, Catherine Burke was by his side.

In her recent filing, Burke states she is in need of financial support from her husband, but it does not specify an amount. The filing also asks the court to equally distribute the marital assets and debt.

150 drivers ride into town for Little Hoosier 100

The racing features drivers ages 5-16 competing in quarter midget rides. Despite being in just its 2nd year, the event is already one of the top of its kind.

Font Size: 150 of the top youth drivers in the country are in Lakeville this weekend for the 2nd annual Little Hoosier 100 at Newton Park.

The event began Saturday morning and continues Sunday at 9am. It is free to the public.

The event features drivers ages 5-16 competing in quarter midget races. Despite being in just its 2nd year, The Little Hoosier 100 is already one of the top of its kind. That's in large part due to the Newton family, which owns Hoosier Racing Tire and is putting on the races.

"It's a great thing for the area and its all because of the Newtons," says Warsaw native Bubba Clem.

Clem is better known by his radio name--Bubba the Love Sponge, where he's a national shock jock on the Howard Stern channel on Sirius.

"I live in Tampa now but it's good to come home and have a place to have fun with my kids," Bubba says.

Bubba's son Tyler won the 2nd race of the day on Saturday in the Junior Honda Division. A part of Tony Stewart's developmental team, the 8-year-old Clem is learning the ropes of both racing and broadcasting already.

"It's really fun and my car was really fast," Tyler explained.

He then spent the next 20 seconds thanking all his sponsors. He didn't miss a single one. Pretty good for an 8-year-old.

IT'S almost two years since RUSSELL BRAND was last broadcasting his ramblings on Radio 2.

Thanks to the Sachsgate nonsense that glorious reign on the airwaves was cut far too short, leaving a huge hole in the weekend schedules which still hasn't been filled.

But Mr Brand is edging closer to inking a deal on a remarkable comeback on the wireless.

An offer, worth millions of dollars, is on the table for Ol' Russ and his gang of chums to take their talents over the Pond to America.

Sirius Radio, a huge satellite broadcaster, has been chasing him for months with chequebook at the ready.

And Russell is now plotting how to slip a new show into his hectic diary.

A pal of his told me: "Russell has been itching to get back on radio for a while now.

"He has been off doing other things but radio is the one thing that still really tickles him.

"He is desperate to do something with JONATHAN ROSS again.

"Jonathan will be free for more fun and games when his BBC contract ends next month.

"Russell's sidekick MATT MORGAN is also keen to get writing and broadcasting again. The Sirius deal is in its infancy but Russell is well up for it. He has been given the hard sell about how they could make him the new HOWARD STERN."

This is shaping up to be massive.

Sirius are a seriously big operation, broadcasting shock jock Howard Stern's shows and special one-offs across America with megastars including EMINEM.

I spent some time there in 2005, when CHRIS MOYLES broadcast his show from their HQ in The Rockefeller Center in New York.

Wossy and Wussell together might be a station boss's nightmare in Britain because of their close-to-the-bone humour. But more fool them.

It would be a ratings winner.

Russell's dabble with TalkSport last summer, knocked out with NOEL GALLAGHER, was a huge hit - more than doubling the station's online audience overnight.

Russell is a big cheese in America now thanks to movies Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him To The Greek.

He's had his first Rolling Stone mag cover and the remake of 1981 comedy movie Arthur is on its way, which will only serve to increase his fame Stateside.

Now is the time to cement the big bucks in America and set himself up for life.

A radio show is the last piece in the jigsaw, especially if he's looking for a cushty once-a-week number when his missus KATY PERRY decides it's time for nippers.

I thought Howard Stern had just gone wacky when he was taking about Michael Jordan's "HITLER MUSTACHE" in his TV commercial.

I had seen the commercial at least 100 times and never saw a hitler mustache. So when the spot aired today I decided to rewind it on the DVR.... Then freeze it during a close up of Michael.

After all that.... It does kind look like a hitler mustache.

UPDATE: Tuddle is indeed now part of Bubba's show. He has had some very funny on air appearances. The problem is that Tuddle was hired as a webmaster, His experience is creating Facebook and Myspace pages! The on air staff love Tuddle. He would make a great stunt guy, But Bubba needs a webmaster... Stay tuned!

A few weeks back I received a Twitter direct message, By mistake I'm sure, From Tuddle saying "I have to get with you sometime to dish the dirt. I have some great stuff to tell you about my former place of work."

He has since deleted the DM, It no longer shows up in my DMs on the web..... Still shows up on my iphone and I have a screen cap... Just for the hell of it.

This past friday I included Tuddle in a Monster #FF (It's Twitter thing) He replied to remind me he is no longer a Monster... Thanked me for the #FF AND SAID HE HAD BEEN WORKING WITH @BTLSradio (Bubba the Love Sponge) FOR THE PAST FEW DAYS!

This is probably pretty big news... Unless it has been mention on the air already... I've missed big chunks of the show this past week.
